August in Jyväskylä! Choose your activities

Posted: August 3, 2013 by Student Ambassador in My shutter

August is already here and all of us are pretty much getting ready to either return to Jyväskylä or to come for the first time.  I want to remind you that August is a very nice month and still summerish! The weather forecast has promised very warm days so you should make the most out of this!

JKL church

In case you are visiting Jyväskylä for your vacation do not forget to check the online travel guide of JKL here:

http://www.serus.fi/JKLmatkailu/eng/

What to see and where to go! Make sure you wont miss any of the good spots!

Cruises & holidays on water

Head off on a boating adventure or simply opt for a relaxing cruise. Rent a canoe, paddle through unspoilt lakeland scenery, or sit back and enjoy the unhurried atmosphere of the region’s harbours.Experience some unforgettable moments!

Tips for those with their own boat
Lake Päijänne and the Keitele-Päijänne canal present extensive and highly varied waterways for those in their own boat. The northern end of Lake Päijänne offers boaters an extensive selection of places to visit. In addition to well-equipped harbours for visiting craft why not drop anchor here:
1) Kalasaari sauna, maintained by a local association.
2) The islands of Säynätsalo, where boaters can tie up at a filling station and the Juurikkasaari dance pavilion.
3) Vaajakoski’s attractive canal, via which boaters can reach Lake Leppävesi and Laukaa’s various harbours.
4) Mämminiemi recreation area in Toivakka, an oasis for boaters, where it’s possible to spend the perfect summer’s day swimming, taking a sauna and enjoying a picnic. Close to Mämminiemi lie the Rappukallio cliffs, off which Päijänne’s deepest point – 94 m – is to be found.

The Jyväskylä guide map

Can be used to explore Jyväskylä in more detail, one area at a time. Find more information, for instance, on recreational trails, biking routes, the loca-tions of different service providers and even the routes taken by local buses.  http://www.kartta.jkl.fi/ims

Did you know?

Unesco world heritage sites – real attention-grabbers

1) Petäjävesi Old Church – masterpiece of construction in wood
Added to Unesco’s world heritage list in 1994 as a prime example of Nordic wooden architecture, Petäjävesi Old Church was completed in 1765. The church is a masterful demonstration of durable construction in wood. Legend has it that the church, like the chapel that stood earlier on the same spot, was built without permission. Small farmers in the area were not prepared to wait for approval from the Stockholm cathedral chapter and erected the cruciform church in 1763 in just 35 days.

2) Oravivuori triangulation tower – 19th century research station
In Korpilahti, at the top of Oravivuori, lies Oravivuori triangulation tower, one of Finland’s six points in the Struve chain. This is a triangulation chain extending from the Black Sea to the Arctic Ocean that was used in the 19th century to establish the shape of the earth. On this spot a triangulation tower has been erected to commemorate the importance of the Oravavuori (or Puolakka) measuring station to the mapping of Finland. Struve’s chain gained inclusion on the UNESCO world heritage list in 2005. Further information on Oravuori tel. +358 40 582 5105.

This you need to know!
Inclusion in the Unesco world heritage list requires that the site is a masterpiece of human creativity or exceptionally important evidence of a previous or existing culture. The number of world heritage sites currentlystands at 911.

Enjoy August as much as you can!

Welcome to Jyväskylä!

STUDENT GRANTS ARE SAFE!
The demonstrations paid off!

Last Thursday brought great news for students across the country: the
threat of compulsory student loans has now been lifted and the
structure of the current student grant system will be retained until
further notice. What is more, high school and vocational school
students will be in a better position for receiving grants in the
future, and the indexing of the grants will prevent the students’
living standards from deteriorating. The grantees doing their second
degrees and those who only gain few credits per year might still
become subject to new, unwelcome limitations, but the harms of a major
reform have now been avoided.

A big thanks to all of you who participated in the demonstrations on
last Monday or Wednesday, in Jyväskylä or in Helsinki! Thankfully, a
mass demonstration of more than 5.000 people was enough to change the
decision-makers’ minds. Good job, everybody!

PARLIAMENT PROPOSING TUITION FEES FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS
A bill suggesting tuition fees for non-European exchange students was
signed last week

A total of 119 Members of Finnish Parliament agreed to sign a bill
that, once passed, would require exchange students arriving from
outside EU and ETA to pay their Finnish host universities for tuition.
Not all parties and organizations agree with the proposition and
discussion has been rather heated. Student organizations worry over
the flawed argumentation on which the bill has been based. The new law
might discourage exchange students from coming to Finland, and by
compromising the principle of free education, it could cause tuition
fees to become more and more common. Both the National Union of
University Students in Finland (SYL) and the Student Union of the
University of Jyväskylä (JYY) are committed to promoting free
education for everybody. The public debate is still ongoing.

CHEAPER AND HEALTHIER STUDENT LUNCHES
You now pay 2,60 € for your lunch

The meal subsidy for university and polytechnic students was increased
by 0,10 € at the turn of the year. Thereby, student lunches now cost
2,60 €. At the same time, Social Insurance Institution issued new
health standards concerning the quality and nutritional values of the
foods. The courses that are prepared according to the new health
recommendations are marked on the menus at all campus cafeterias.
